Interfaith dialogue
can offer our increasingly polarised communities an opportunity to be
part of an alternative to any call to arms. In a complex world where
simplistic answers and short-term proposals often seem the easiest to
support, a dialogue between faiths - that requires patience and goodwill
– can contribute something of lasting value. As a Hindu monastic,
I was therefore honoured and delighted when Reading Hindu Temple asked
me to serve my community by becoming its representative in the Reading
Interfaith Group.
I have
for years been fascinated by the ancient teachings of the Sanatana Dharma
(Hinduism) and several of my translations of Sanskrit Hindu texts into
English have been published. What has always struck me is that at the
heart of these teachings is the search for ‘ekam sat’ ~
the One Truth. That One Truth was always believed to be within the reach
of all women and men, whatever their faith, ethnicity or social status.
That One Truth, Hinduism has traditionally held, is too big to be confined
to any one religion or creed, and can only be found in the limitless
space of the human heart.
I therefore
look forward to all that our continuing dialogue may bring.
