1987
5th February- World Religion Day organized
by the Bah ai community. Members of all faiths were invited to come
and read from the Bah ai scriptures. This event was held in the Abbey
Room, Reading Library.
Tuesday 10th March- Reading Interfaith
Group visited Reading Synagogue.
7th April- Members of the Sikh and Jewish
Community each gave a talk about Marriage in their own faith tradition.
First
Reading Interfaith Group Committee Meeting.
Monday 15th June-
All faiths represented in Reading were invited to send a representative.
This meeting was attended by delegates from the Christian Quaker,
Bah ai, Reading Hebrew Congregation, Anglican, Roman Catholic, Sikh,
and Buddhist communities of Reading. Apologies were received from
the Imam, Hindu community and Thames Valley Progressive Jews who were
unable to make it that evening.
The Reading Interfaith Group's precarious financial position was noted
since it is funded entirely by subscriptions. At the time there were
just 35 members. A suggestion was made that each faith community be
asked to provide a subscription of £10. This particular minute
has not yet been carried out!
Saturday 4th July- Summer
Outing to Woking Mosque, The Priory of Our Lady at Sayers Common,
and Chithurst Buddhist Monastery. Although 36 members attended, it
was agreed that future events should be planned with more care to
avoid the Jewish Sabbath.
Approx 11th October- “At
Home in the Succah” Reading Interfaith Group met the Jewish
community to learn about their way of life and the Festival of the
Tabernacles.
Reading Interfaith Group used this opportunity to express condolence
for the recent break in at the synagogue and theft of the Synagogue's
menorah.
In response to external criticism at this time they stated “We
are a group of people who are committed to our own particular traditions
but who wish to learn about other peoples’ beliefs. When we
have gone to places of worship we have gone as observers rather than
worshippers.”
Monday 23rd November-
An Evening of Music and Prayer” was held at Wesley Methodist
Church.

you want to see what God thinks of money, just look at all the people
He gave it to.
