The History Of Religious Toleration in Reading

Reading's geographical position has always made it accessible to new ideas. Situated on a major road and river network 30 miles west of London, Reading has always been a trading and communication centre.

For centuries Reading has been home to religious thinkers, pioneers, reformers and extremists who have consistently challenged the concept of conformity and a single state religion.

The high priority given to principle and faith has led to much suffering and several martyrdoms in Reading. This feature belonging to many different faith backgrounds and traditions developed over time into a collective commitment for religious toleration in Reading.
